The Australia Day long weekend has been and gone again, but have no fear Australia is the land of the long weekend and the next one ( Labor Day ) is just around the corner. To keep you going until then there is still a week left of Melbournes Midsumma Festival and this weekend was heaps of fun again. On carnival day I was lucky enough to bump in to a cute lad in pink briefs and pink crop top handing out flyers for Sugar Babies, a Boylesque musical. I love Boylesque and I’ve been to shows previously around Melbourne and in London. There’s loads of fun to be had watching scantily clad lads sing and dance live. The Sugar babies were great fun and very talented. The show is a selection of great songs that take you on a Sugar Babies journey from rags to riches and self realisation and if love a good fan dance, sparkly jockstraps and good ole fashioned bubble butts then you’d love the show. The boys sing live too which makes their talent doubly impressive. I’ve always been a little bit jealous of people who can sing and dance.
Saturday turned out to be a lazy day in and then Sunday was Pool Party time. The sun stayed behind the clouds but it was still hot enough to have some fun and go for a swim with 700 others at the Prahran Pool. The water polo boys held an improvised game in the shallow end using floaty rings and the rest of us knocked about with giant beach balls in the pool. There was a sausage sizzle and a DJ knocking out and endless stream of Gay anthems from the eighties and nineties. The music could have done with s serious update. Mostly we all love the odd anthem to get the energy up mixed in to a more current line up but when its just runs back to back for four hours it starts to feel a little cliche, a lot of my friends were looking at each other thinking “haven’t we moved on from this?” Otherwise it was chilled out day and a good way to spend a Sunday afternoon. The crowds at the pool parties are very different from the Carnival day crowd. I’d go so far as to say it’s quite a bit more plastic, but Prahran has a reputation for being a very cruisey pool and I wonder if the party was held at a different pool, would it have attracted a more diverse crowd. I could certainly see how someone with body confidence issues would feel uncomfortable here or even stay away.
Finally the public holiday Monday was Pizza and Rose time with the besties while we watched the sunset. I’ve been starving myself and smashing this diet lately so I wolfed down a whole meat lovers pizza and didn’t give a second thought to it. Banger weekend all around.
Next weekend is Pride March. Can’t wait.
