Gay 101. The Darkroom survival guide.

Darkrooms or back-rooms are cruising mazes that are found in some venues whose main purpose is to provide party goers with a place to have sex. They can be very hot if you have an exhibitionist streak or enjoy group play but they can also be very dangerous especially when drugs and alcohol are involved.

Here are a couple of tips I can give you for staying safe in darkrooms and still have a good time.

1- Safe sex!

Darkrooms are a common place to pick up something nasty and not just HIV either. Not being able to see is a real problem.

If you are a bottom always insert your partner yourself. This will give you the chance to check that they are wearing a condom. There are some assholes who will pretend to put one on or who will break the condom without you noticing. Always reach back and insert them yourself so that you can check there is a condom on.

If you are a Top, don’t be an asshole. Nobody deserves to get sick for your 30 seconds of fun, put on a fresh rubber each time you fuck.

Never put a lubey cock in your mouth! You don’t know where it’s been or if its been safe. You could pick up a nasty stomach bug or worse. A quick sniff and touch to check will tell you quickly enough.

Avoid being fingered. Again you don’t know where those hands have been.

2- Be decisive and vocal.

Remember mostly it will be too dark for people to see your face, there is no point frowning at somebody if they can’t see you.

If you don’t like somebody or what they are doing tell them NO! Push them away politely. Most people are respectful. If they persist a loud fuck off usually does the trick for me.

Enjoy yourself but stay aware and use your common sense. Like all adult playgrounds there are risks but you can reduce you chances of an unwanted souvenir by being smart.

Sorry, Shannon. I just had to laugh at your headline. Considering that you are a professional photographer, I would have thought that the term “darkroom” would have come up in your experiences. A “darkroom” is an old fashioned, film photographer’s friend. It’s where he has the capabilities to remove film from the camera and with the help of the silver nitrate processes, develop that film into those magnificient photographs. The digital revolution has doomed the darkroom to the dust bin of yesteryear πŸ™‚
