An open letter to my 16yo self.

IMG_0492 Three years ago I wrote this letter to myself in response to a question from a blog reader. It’s as relevant now as it ever was. If you could meet your 16yo self what would you say?

Dear Shannon,

you don’t know me but I know you and I want you to know,

it gets better.

I know right now that you feel like the world is a place where you don’t want to be and I know what you are planning. Everybody has times in their life when they have to endure pain and heartache. The measure of a person is how they deal with these things. You are hurting right now but trust me when I say that you have the strength to get through it.

There are things you are going to learn about yourself, experiences you are going to have and people you are going to meet who are going to make your life extraordinary. You will travel, love, laugh and live and all the time you are going to discover who you really are.

You’re going to swim with the dolphins, jump from planes, watch sun sets on pristine sands, walk the mountains and sail the oceans. You will drink with friends, gaze at the stars, awake in the warm embrace of a cherished lover, fly over snow capped peaks, feel the elation of the crowd and so much more.

There are some hard days ahead, days that you think you will never get through, but always you will make it and some days your heart will be bursting so much with joy that you will smile from ear to ear.

You see my friend, the Universe is watching you and waiting for you stand up and step out. It knows you have value and it knows what you are capable of and so do I.

I could tell you what’s coming. I could tell you who to avoid and the paths to take. I could tell you how to avoid heartbreak or which of your friends will let you down but I know that I don’t need to.

You might not recognize me, but I know you very well.

I can tell you without a single doubt, I am ok. All the bumps along the way will make you the person I am today. I would not trade a single moment of it or go back in time to change any of it.

Stick in there… great things are coming and if you ever need help look inside. I am right here.

Trust me.

Your best friend
