A night in the country…

Last night I spent the night in Glastonbury. I was invited down when I first arrived in the UK and after a couple of false starts finally managed to get there. I took the train from Paddington station about an hour and a half down towards Somerset. I’m really enjoying traveling by train because I get to see the countryside.

The country was even colder than London but it made a nice change of pace from the cities. My loverly host also managed to take me to Wells and to see the Cathedral there. I don’t think there is a town in England that doesn’t have a church, cathedral, abbey, bishops palace or some other religious thing. They are beautiful sure enough and although I’m not religious person I still look on the architecture with awe. The Cathedral in Wells was already hundreds of years old Australia was settled by Europeans.

It was nice getting out of the city for some country cooking and a slower change of pace but the best part of the trip was discovering that the main street and supermarket were the setting for one of my favorite films; Hot Fuzz! The shoot out with the towns people in the main street is one of the classic sequences of the film, if you haven’t seen it go, do it now… NOW!

I’ll definitely be coming back to my country retreat and to my most gracious host.

Impressive photos. There’s just so much great old stuff in GB and Europe going back to long before Australia and the U.S. were founded.
